Period in British history from the mid-1st
century BC to the mid-4th century ad. Roman
relations with Britain began with Caesar's
invasions of 55 and 54 BC, but the actual
conquest was not begun until AD 43. England
was rapidly Romanized, but north of York
fewer remains of Roman civilization have been
found. After several unsuccessful attempts to
conquer Scotland the northern frontier was
fixed at Hadrian's Wall. During the 4th
century Britain was raided by the Saxons,
Picts, and Scots. The Roman armies were
withdrawn 407 but there were partial
re-occupations 417-c. 427 and c. 450. Roman
towns include London, York, Chester, St
Albans, Colchester, Lincoln, Gloucester, and
Bath. The most permanent remains of the
occupation were the system of military roads
radiating from London.
